A drink is any liquid meant for consumption intended for human consumption intended for consumption within an hour. In addition to their primary function of fulfilling thirst, beverages play various other roles in modern society. Common varieties of beverages include coffee, tea, soda, milk and hot chocolate.

The variety of beverages available to the consuming public is so extensive that it would almost be impossible to name them all.

Drinks are broadly divided into two categories, namely “soft drinks” and “alcoholic beverages.” Within the category of soft drinks, the most common are carbonated and non-carbonated drinks such as sport energy drinks, fruit juice, and other cordial. Alcoholic beverages are more plentiful and include beer, wine, distilled spirits, champagne, vodka, gin, brandy and port. While most of these products are consumed with food, a small portion is often taken by individuals with no meal and just want some form of refreshment before going to sleep or while working.

All soft drinks contain carbon dioxide, which is absorbed by the body through the mouth into blood and is used for energy. Carbonated drinks are generally lighter than other varieties of drinks because of the presence of carbon dioxide. The carbonation also triggers taste sensations in the mouth that provide pleasure and fulfillment. Some carbonated beverages that have a high alcohol content also have bubbles that produce carbonation. When the beverage is consumed with meals, the bubbles are often seen to prevent swallowing, but this has no calories associated with it and only gives the drink a delicious taste.

Wines are another example of a type of drink. Some wines actually contain more alcohol content than most brands of soft drinks, but because wine is produced from grape juice, it has less alcohol than most wines. One type of wine, Chardonnay, is very popular in America because of its low-alcohol nature. It contains no calories and can be consumed in several ways. Some people like to drink champagne with their meals, but the high amount of alcohol could lead to excessive gas and bloating. Other types of wine, such as Pinot Noir and Merlot, are more appropriate for hot drinks.

Many people enjoy alcoholic drinks in moderation. For adults who have a habit of regularly consuming excessive amounts of alcohol, they may be the type of people who should limit the amount of calories consumed with their beverages. However, for many people, one or two alcoholic beverages per day are not an issue and are part of their lifestyle. Excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages is the main article relating to weight gain.

Fruit juice drinks and artificially flavored cordial are considering to be the main article for beverages containing sugar. In America, soda and energy drinks are the main types of soft drinks, while in Europe, fruit juice drinks are considered to be the main article. Soft drinks are considered to be the main article for increasing the level of calorie consumption. Most people do not realize that a glass of wine with dinner can be just as beneficial to reducing weight as soft drinks are.
